thb_03NAC8U4.jpgDuring the first half of their Civil War, the USA flag displayed 34 stars - but a 35th star was added when Western Virginia seceded from Virginia and formed a state of their own.

It should be noted here that Congress had never made any regulation about what type of star pattern should be used on the "official" United States flag. Therefore, any pattern was acceptable.
