Sheet showing several textured paper 34-star flags of a 1863-1865 US warship. Sizes: ensign W11 x L18 mm, mast flags W8 x L13 mm, jack W6 x L9 mm, pennant W4 x L48 mm.
During the first half of their Civil War, the USA flag displayed 34 stars - but a 35th star was added when Western Virginia seceded from Virginia and formed a state of their own.
It should be noted here that Congress had never made any regulation about what type of star pattern should be used on the "official" United States flag. Therefore, any pattern was acceptable.
