Sheet showing several textured paper 34-star flags of a 1861-1863 US warship. Sizes: ensign W11 x L18 mm, mast flags W8 x L13 mm, jack W6 x L9 mm, pennant W4 x L48 mm.
At the very start of their Civil War, the USA flag displayed 33 stars - but a 34th star was added when Kansas joined the Union a few months later.
It should be noted here that Congress had never made any regulation about what type of star pattern should be used on the "official" United States flag. Therefore, any pattern was acceptable.
