During the 1821 uprising against Ottoman rule, several different flags were used by Greek naval squadrons - many of them sharing a light blue cross in a prominent place of a mostly white field - or inversely.
An ultimate ensign design was adopted by the First National Assembly at Epidaurus in January 1822. Although intended to serve just as naval ensign at first, this flag currently stands as Greece's sole national flag.
