Sheet showing several textured paper historical flags of the 1785-1931 Spanish Navy. Sizes: larger ensign W1 x L18 mm, smaller ensigns W8 x L12 mm, jack W6 x L9 mm, pennant W4 x L48 mm.

In 1785 King Charles III decided to replace the war ensign used since Philip V's times, white with the Spanish coat-of-arms, for a new, distinct ensign which could not easily be mistaken with those of other countries (mainly Bourbon-ruled ones as France, Parma, Tuscany or Two Sicilies). The design finally selected displayed three horizontal stripes, being the central one to be twice as wide as each of the other two. Such ensign lasted until replaced in 1931 by the Spanish Republic's tricolor - to be restored again in 1938 by Franco's regime.
