By the second half of 17th century Spanish Navy ensigns tended to show the Royal Coat of Arms in a prominent place of flag, overlapping the traditional Burgundy Cross or even fully replacing it. Besides, a coloured or embroidered fringe became frequent too, extending from 2 to 4 sides of the flag.
