According to the chronicles of the portuguese military and historian Francisco Manuel de Melo (1608-1666), when in 1640 Catalonia shortly seceded from Spain, its Navy used a white ensign with a Principality coat of arms at its center, flanked by a red fleur-de-lis on each corner –these latter presumably intended to symbolize its alliance to France.
