On December 1798 the French revolutionary army occupied Turin and a while later forced Charles Emmanuel IV to abdicate and leave for the island of Sardinia, while Piedmont and Savoy were annexed to France. The new Sardinian ensign reflected this status in a purely Sardinian canton on a blue flag - color of the House of Savoy.
